What Is the TELEFUNKEN U47?

The TELEFUNKEN U47 is a large-diaphragm tube condenser microphone developed by Neumann in 1950s Germany and sold under the Telefunken brand.
It's a historic model used on the vocal tracks of countless classic records, and it's still regarded today as a "legendary microphone" in professional studios.

Built around the M7 capsule and a VF14 vacuum tube, it's known for a warm low-mid range, natural sheen, and a commanding vocal presence.
Its pronounced proximity effect makes it a go-to choice across genres — pop, rock, R&B, jazz — whenever you want a voice that's "thick and out front."
We keep a vintage U47 set up in our vocal booth, and it's been used on countless artists' recordings.

About the Vintage U47

Most of what circulates today as a "U47" is either a genuine vintage (original) unit from that era, or a reissue/clone produced later by other manufacturers.

• Vintage U47 (Telefunken / Neumann): Depending on when it was made and its individual history, tone and sensitivity can vary from unit to unit.
  That variation is exactly what many studios and engineers seek out — "the character of this particular unit."
  Component aging over the decades is often considered part of what defines the "vintage sound."
• Current reissues and clones differ in sonic direction depending on the manufacturer. Some aim to recreate the vintage character; others prioritize modern usability.
