TELEFUNKEN U47 for Vocalists
A rundown of how to get the most out of the U47 in vocal-forward recordings — pop, R&B, and ballads.
Why the U47 Suits Vocals
The U47 is a tube condenser microphone defined by a warm low-mid range, natural sheen, and presence.
It tends to make a voice feel "thick and out front," which suits pop, R&B, and ballads where you don't want the vocal getting lost in the mix.
It also has a pronounced proximity effect — the low end that builds as you move closer to the mic — so you can control thickness and clarity to some degree just by adjusting your distance from it.
Distance and Positioning
At our studio, we generally suggest working at around 15–25cm from the mouth as a starting point.
Get too close and the low end can build up too much, or breath and consonants become overly prominent.
Too far, and presence weakens while more room reverb tends to bleed in.
We recommend fine-tuning your position together with the engineer to suit your vocal style and the song.
Tips for Pop and R&B
- Dynamics: The U47 handles louder singing well, so belting out big moments tends not to distort easily.
It suits expressive, dynamic performances. - Pairing with compression: Adding a compressor afterward tends to give the vocal an even more "settled" feel.
Our own chain often runs a moderate compressor after the U47. - Doubles and harmonies: Using the U47 for the main vocal and recording doubles or harmonies with the same mic helps keep the tonal character consistent.
Before You Record
Tube microphones take a little time to warm up.
We power ours on and let it stabilize ahead of time, but we still recommend doing a short test take or rehearsal a few minutes before your real take so both your voice and the mic are settled.
Adjusting your distance and delivery to match how your voice feels that day will also help you land a take you're happy with.
